Book Review: BEAUTIFUL RUINS (Jess Walter)

What it's about: Hollywood, Italy, the 60s, the movie Cleopatra, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's torrid romance, early care and feeding of the paparazzi, starlets, satire, present-day reality shows, and the links between then and now. Author Jess Walter, in his sixth amazing novel, has woven several compelling story lines across decades to create a rich, deep picture of American culture and times.

What it's really about: the unsurprising and inevitable crappiness of people, and the enduring nature of love.  Recommend.
