Redding chooses deputy fire chief

Phil Paige of Vista, Calif., has been chosen as the deputy fire chief / fire marshal for the Redding Fire Department. He began his duties today (Monday, July 28).

Paige held the same position in Vista, a city of approximately 96,000 in northern San Diego County, for the past four years. Before that, he served for 24 years in the Woodinville (Washington) Fire Department, rising to the rank of battalion chief.

The deputy fire chief salary range is $6,426 - $10,518 a month. The employee pays 10 percent of the health and welfare benefits premium, which is currently $126 a month. The retirement benefit for unrepresented employees is 2.7 percent at 55 (he must have five years of service and be at least age 50 to retire from the city; if the employee retires before age 55, he would not receive the whole 2.7 percent -- it would be prorated).

Paige holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer program. He also attended a fellowship program at Harvard University for EFO graduates.

Paige replaces Bruce Becker, who retired July 18 after eight years with the city.
