Heavenly upgrade for Winchell's Donuts

The familiar yellow Winchell's signs in Redding are about to come down.

In their place will be sky-blue signs for Heavenly Donuts.

Owner Mike Garrett is turning several shops into this new line of donuts, muffins, danishes and sandwiches.

"I'm very excited," he said today. "I'm just waiting for the signage, and we'll be up and running."

The two Redding Winchell's stores, one downtown and one on Hilltop, and the Doughboy Donuts on Lake Boulevard will become Heavenly Donuts. Garrett said he'll eventually have nine shops from L.A. up to Olympia, Wash., and over into Las Vegas.

"It's going to look like a franchise, and it will work into a franchise." He's getting out of the Winchell's business because the product quality has changed, he said.

"We were having customers return things. It's just not the same."

Garrett started in the donut business 23 years ago with a store in nearby Red Bluff.
