How to say thank you

John Irving's new novel, "Until I Find You," thudded onto my desk in the afternoon mail. The return address was that of an acquaintance, Scott Thomson, director of the Shasta College Foundation.

No explanation.

Scott and I have talked about books, and we like some of the same authors, but I couldn't remember talking about this one. Why would he send it?

I lifted the cover.

The first blank page was covered with gracious thank-you notes from students he teaches, a group I talked with recently about the newspaper and my job.

That, my friends, is one charming thank-you gift.
